Challenge

Design a 3D printed car that fits within the requirements below. Use the rubric to guide your presentation to the judges and your engineering design process. The judges will be using these rubric to score you. The award categories are: best design, fastest car, and longest distance. Teams will choose a 4 digit team number for approval or will be assigned numbers upon registration.

  • Design must have at least 3 wheels touching the racetrack.
  • Cannot be wider than 2 3/4″ wide and must have up to a maximum 30% infill. There is a shell limitation of 2 shells. The shell maximum size is 2 mm.
  • The car body must fit on the build plate in one print. It’s maximum length may be 8″. The max height is 5″.
  • The team number must be designed into the car.
  • The car must have one classic car feature.
  • The car is encouraged to have a St. Patrick’s Day theme.
  • The height of the gutter for this competition is 3′.
  • The maximum weight of the car allowed is 1.5 lbs. No additional weighting of 3D material is allowed. If you choose to use a 3D pen it must be for appropriate uses like adhering parts together. Non-appropriate uses would include decorating the car in order to add extra weight, creating solid objects on the car to add extra weight, etc. Use of the 3D pen must be acknowledged in your engineering notebook.
  • Must be entirely 3D printed (the filament must go through the extruder of the 3D printer), adhesive materials allowed just make sure that it is documented in the engineering notebook.
  • Must be 100% STUDENT designed
    • You are allowed to look for ideas online but you must include inspiring pictures and models (from Thingiverse or similar websites, books, magazines, etc.) in your engineering notebook.
    • Teachers and mentors are allowed to ask prompting questions but may not tell a student what to fix on their prototype.
  • You are required to keep an engineering notebook that documents your team’s design process to present to the judges. This documentation should be a working document. Please make your engineering notebook portable to take to the judges table. Items included:
    • Prototypes
    • Sketches
    • Pictures from inspiring designs, ideas, etc.
    • Website links used for inspiration
    • Articulate your decision making process
